Synchrotron will be built on Russky Island in the Far Eastern Federal District

A synchrotron charged particle accelerator is planned to be built in the Far Eastern Federal District.

According to the information of the Russian government, to create a scientific installation of the “megascience” class decided on Russky Island. The Russian authorities allocated more than 12 billion rubles for the construction of the accelerator complex.

It is planned to erect a building with an area of about 20,000 square meters to house the facility. Construction is expected to be completed in 2026.

As explained in the message, electrons in the synchrotron are accelerated to almost the speed of light. Their acceleration is provided by magnetic fields generated inside the ring of the installation.

The accelerator complex can be used, in particular, in the development of new materials designed to work in extreme conditions, as well as antibacterial and antiviral drugs.

Currently, the synchrotron operates in the Russian Federation on the basis of the Kurchatov Institute.
