Passing the state exam in China

In early June, unified state exams for admission to higher educational institutions begin in China — gaokao. The final exam is conducted mainly in the format of a written test and lasts 2-3 days.

Three subjects are mandatory for passing everywhere: Chinese, mathematics, foreign language — usually English, but may also be Japanese, Russian, or French. The rest, at least three, can be chosen using different systems.

With its roots, gaokao, one might say, goes into another exam — keju. In 605, the first keju exam, or imperial exam, took place. Gaokao was introduced to China in 1952, but it was canceled in 1966. The first national gaokao was held in 1977 with almost 6 million people.
